Kenmore Washing Machines Smells Bad (Musty or Mildew): How to Fix It Yourself

- Do not mix bleach with vinegar — the combination creates toxic fumes.
- Use either bleach or vinegar, never both in the same cleaning cycle.
- Ventilate the laundry area while cleaning.

Step-by-Step Repair
- Step 1 of 51
Clean the door seal
Pull back the rubber door gasket and wipe inside all the folds with a cloth soaked in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. You will likely find dark mildew buildup and sometimes small items trapped in there. Scrub stubborn spots with an old toothbrush.

Clean the detergent dispenser
Pull the dispenser drawer completely out (press the release tab if your model has one). Soak it in hot soapy water for 10 minutes, then scrub all compartments. Wipe the cavity it sits in with a vinegar-soaked cloth.

Run a hot cleaning cycle
With the washer empty, add 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum. Select the hottest and longest cycle available (or the dedicated tub clean cycle if your model has one). Let it run completely.

Clean the drain filter
Open the small panel at the bottom-front of the washer. Place towels under it, unscrew the filter cap, and remove any trapped debris. Rinse the filter under running water. Reinstall it and close the panel.

Prevent future odor
After every wash, leave the door slightly open to let the drum dry out. Switch to HE detergent if you are not already using it — regular detergent creates excess suds that leave residue. Run a monthly cleaning cycle with vinegar or a washing machine cleaner tablet.

When to Call a Professional
If the smell persists after a deep clean, the door boot seal may be permanently moldy inside the rubber and need replacing ($80–$150 installed). If you smell sewage rather than mildew, a plumber should check your standpipe connection.
