Whirlpool Ovens & Ranges Oven Not Reaching Set Temperature: How to Fix It Yourself

When your Whirlpool oven heats up but does not reach the temperature you set (food is undercooked, baking takes too long), the most common causes are a faulty temperature sensor, a weak bake element, or just needing a temperature calibration. An oven thermometer is the best $5 investment for diagnosing this problem.

⚡ Difficulty: Medium20-45 minutes💰 Parts cost: $10–$50🔧 Tools: Oven thermometer, Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver

⚠️ Safety First

  • Turn off the oven at the circuit breaker before doing any repair work.
  • Let the oven cool completely before working inside it.
  • Electric ovens use 240 volts — make sure the breaker is off and verify with a multimeter.
  • For gas models, turn off the gas supply valve.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Test with an oven thermometer

Place an oven thermometer in the center of the oven. Set the oven to 350°F and wait 20 minutes. Check the thermometer. If it reads 25°F or less off, you may be able to fix it with a calibration adjustment. If it is 50°F or more off, something needs replacing.

  2. 2

    Try the calibration adjustment

Many Whirlpool ovens let you adjust the temperature offset. Check your manual for the exact procedure — typically you press and hold the Bake button, then use the up/down arrows to adjust in 5-degree increments. This can compensate for minor temperature differences.

  3. 3

    Inspect the bake element

Turn off the breaker. Open the oven and look at the bake element (bottom coil). When working properly, it should glow red evenly across its entire length. If you noticed cold spots or sections that do not glow, the element is failing. Look for visible damage — cracks, blisters, or holes.

  4. 4

    Test the temperature sensor

The temperature sensor is a thin probe at the back of the oven cavity (near the top). Turn off the breaker, disconnect the sensor's wire harness at the back of the range, and test it with a multimeter. At room temperature, it should read around 1080–1100 ohms. A significantly different reading means it needs replacing.

  5. 5

    Replace the faulty part

If the bake element is bad: with the breaker off, remove the 2 screws, pull it forward, disconnect the wires, and swap in the new one. If the sensor is bad: remove the mounting screw from the back of the range, pull the old sensor out, and install the new one. Both are straightforward swaps.

  6. 6

Test with the oven thermometer again

Turn the breaker back on. Set the oven to 350°F and wait 20 minutes. Check the thermometer. It should now be within 25°F of the set temperature. Run a few baking tests to confirm everything is working correctly.

If That Didn't Work

  • Oven door gasket not sealing (heat escaping)
  • Faulty control board
  • Damaged convection fan (convection models)
  • Gas valve issue (gas models)

When to Call a Professional

If a new element and sensor do not fix the temperature issue, the control board may need replacing. Control boards are expensive ($100–$250) and can be tricky to diagnose without experience. Also check the door gasket — if it is torn or loose, heat escapes and the oven cannot maintain temperature. A tech visit for this issue typically costs $120–$250.
