LG Ovens & Ranges Gas Oven Igniter Not Working: How to Fix It Yourself

When your LG gas oven does not heat, the most common cause is a weak or dead igniter. The igniter needs to glow hot enough to open the gas safety valve โ€” if it is worn out, it glows but never gets hot enough, so no gas flows and the oven does not heat. Replacing the igniter is one of the most common gas oven repairs, and most people can do it.

โšก Difficulty: Mediumโฑ 30-45 minutes๐Ÿ’ฐ Parts cost: $20โ€“$50๐Ÿ”ง Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Multimeter (optional)

โš ๏ธ Safety First

  • Turn off the gas supply valve before starting any work.
  • Turn off the oven at the circuit breaker as well.
  • If you smell gas at any time, stop immediately, leave the house, and call your gas company.
  • Do not touch the new igniter element with bare fingers โ€” oils from your skin shorten its life. Handle it with a cloth.
  • Make sure the gas is off before reconnecting any wires.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Turn off gas and power

Turn off the gas supply valve (usually behind or beside the range). Also turn off the circuit breaker for the oven. This is critical for safety โ€” you are working near gas lines.

  2. 2

Remove the oven racks and floor panel

Take out all the oven racks. The oven floor panel lifts up and slides out โ€” some models have screws at the back holding it down. Remove the floor panel to expose the burner tube and igniter underneath.

  3. 3

Observe how the igniter behaves (diagnostic test)

Before replacing anything, turn the gas and power back on briefly. Set the oven to Bake at 350ยฐF. Watch the igniter. It should glow bright orange within 30 seconds and the gas should ignite within 60โ€“90 seconds. If it glows weakly (dull orange) for more than 90 seconds without gas igniting, it is too weak. If it does not glow at all, it is dead. Turn gas and power back off.

  4. 4

    Remove the old igniter

With gas and power off, locate the igniter next to the burner tube. It is held by 2 screws. Remove the screws. Follow the igniter wire to where it plugs in (usually near the back of the oven behind the rear panel). Disconnect the wire harness plug. Gently remove the igniter.

  5. 5

    Install the new igniter

Handle the new igniter with a cloth โ€” do not touch the glowing element with bare fingers. Connect the wire harness. Position the igniter next to the burner tube in the same spot as the old one. Secure it with the 2 screws. Do not overtighten โ€” the igniter is fragile ceramic.

  6. 6

    Reassemble and test

Put the oven floor panel back in and replace the racks. Turn the gas supply back on. Turn the breaker back on. Set the oven to Bake at 350ยฐF. The new igniter should glow bright orange and the gas should ignite within 60 seconds. You should hear a soft 'whoomph' when the gas lights. Let it run for 10 minutes to confirm steady heating.

If That Didn't Work

  • Faulty gas safety valve
  • Broken wire harness or loose connection
  • Faulty oven control board
  • Gas supply issue (low pressure or turned off)

When to Call a Professional

If the new igniter glows strong but gas still does not flow, the gas safety valve may be faulty. Replacing the safety valve involves working directly on gas connections โ€” if you are not experienced with gas line work, absolutely call a pro. A tech will charge $150โ€“$300 for igniter or safety valve replacement on a gas oven.
