Step-by-Step Repair
- Step 1 of 51
Replace the batteries
Put in fresh, name-brand batteries. Even if you replaced them recently, try new ones — cheap batteries can die quickly. Make sure they're inserted in the correct orientation (+/-).

Clean the IR sensor
Clean the IR emitter on the front tip of the remote with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Also clean the IR receiver on the TV (usually a small dark spot on the bottom front edge).

Test the remote with your phone camera
Point the remote at your phone's front camera and press a button. If the remote is working, you'll see a purple/white flash through the camera. If you see nothing, the remote is dead.

Check for obstructions
Make sure nothing is blocking the line of sight between the remote and the TV's IR sensor. Sound bars, decorations, or even a dirty sensor window can block the signal.

Re-pair the remote (for Bluetooth/RF remotes)
Some smart TV remotes use Bluetooth, not IR. Check your TV's settings for a "Pair Remote" option. Hold the pairing button on the remote (usually for 5+ seconds) to put it in pairing mode.

When to Call a Professional
If a new remote doesn't work either, the TV's IR receiver board may be faulty. This is an inexpensive part ($10-$20) but requires opening the TV. A universal remote ($10-$15) is often the easiest solution.
