Frigidaire Refrigerators Freezing Food in Fresh Food Section: How to Fix It Yourself

Check the temperature setting
The fresh food section should be set between 37 and 40 degrees F. If the control is set too cold, adjust it warmer. On models with a numbered dial (1–9), try setting it to 4 or 5. Place a thermometer inside and check after 12 hours.

Check for blocked air vents
Cold air enters the fridge through vents (usually at the top back). If food items are pushed directly against these vents, the cold air blows straight onto that food and freezes it. Rearrange items to leave space around the vents.

Inspect the damper control
The damper is a small door between the freezer and fridge that opens and closes to regulate cold air flow. Find it at the top of the fridge compartment (usually behind a plastic cover). If it is stuck open, too much cold air enters. Try moving it by hand — it should swing freely.

Test the thermistor
If the temperature setting and damper seem fine, the thermistor (temperature sensor) may be giving the control board a wrong reading. Unplug the fridge, locate the thermistor (a small sensor clipped to the evaporator or wall), and test its resistance with a multimeter. It should change resistance as temperature changes.

Check the door seal
A weak door seal lets warm air in, which makes the compressor run longer and overcool the fridge. Close the door on a dollar bill — if you can pull it out easily, the seal is weak. Clean the seal with warm soapy water to restore its grip, or replace it if it is cracked.
