Nintendo Game Consoles Joy-Con Drift: How to Fix It Yourself

Joy-Con drift โ€” where your character moves on screen even when you're not touching the stick โ€” is one of the most common Nintendo Switch problems. It's caused by dust under the stick or worn-out contacts. A quick cleaning with compressed air fixes it temporarily, and a $5-$12 stick replacement fixes it permanently. This is a very doable repair.

  • The Joy-Con contains very small screws and delicate ribbon cables. Work slowly and carefully.
  • Keep track of the different screw sizes โ€” mixing them up can strip the screw holes.
  • The Joy-Con battery has a small ribbon cable. Disconnect it carefully before working inside.

Step-by-Step Repair

  1. 1

    Calibrate the joystick first

Go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks. Follow the on-screen instructions. If the stick shows movement when you're not touching it, calibration confirms the drift is real. This alone doesn't usually fix drift, but it rules out software issues.

  2. 2

Clean under the stick flap with compressed air

Gently lift the small rubber flap at the base of the joystick. Spray short bursts of compressed air under the flap from different angles. This can blow out dust and debris that's causing the drift. Test the controller after cleaning โ€” this temporary fix works for many people and lasts days to weeks.

  3. 3

    Clean with isopropyl alcohol

Lift the rubber flap again. Dip a cotton swab in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and gently rub it around the base of the joystick under the flap. Move the joystick in circles while doing this. Let it dry for 5 minutes. The alcohol dissolves the buildup on the contacts. This fix lasts longer than compressed air alone.

  4. 4

Open the Joy-Con for a permanent fix

If cleaning didn't work permanently, it's time to replace the stick module. Remove the four tri-wing screws from the back of the Joy-Con. Carefully lift the back panel. Disconnect the battery ribbon cable. You'll see the joystick module held in place by a small metal bracket and two Phillips screws.

  5. 5

    Replace the analog stick module

Remove the two Phillips screws holding the stick bracket. Carefully lift out the old stick module and disconnect its ribbon cable from the connector (lift the small dark flap on the connector first, then slide the ribbon out). Slide the new stick's ribbon cable in, close the flap, and screw the new module in place.

  6. 6

    Reassemble and test

Reconnect the battery ribbon cable. Place the back panel on and replace the four tri-wing screws. Go to System Settings and calibrate the new stick. Test it in a game โ€” the drift should be completely gone. The whole replacement takes about 20 minutes once you've done it once.

If That Didn't Work

  • Nintendo offers free Joy-Con drift repair even without warranty in many countries. Check Nintendo's support website before buying parts.
  • Software updates can occasionally cause temporary drift-like behavior. Update your Switch and controller firmware.
  • Using third-party thumb grips that are too tight can push the stick off-center.

When to Call a Professional

Joy-Con drift is so common that Nintendo repairs it for free in the US, Canada, and many EU countries โ€” even without a warranty. Contact Nintendo Support before spending any money.
