Google Android Phones Not Charging: How to Fix It Yourself
A Google Pixel not charging is almost always caused by lint packed inside the charging port, a bad cable, or a software glitch. Before you assume the worst, a 5-minute cleaning usually fixes it. Most people are surprised how much pocket lint builds up in there.
โ ๏ธ Safety First
- Never use a metal object to clean the charging port โ you can short-circuit the pins and fry your phone.
- Don't force the charging cable in. If it doesn't click in smoothly, the port needs cleaning or repair.

Step-by-Step Repair
- 1
Inspect the charging port
Grab a flashlight and look inside the USB-C port on the bottom of your Pixel. You'll probably see lint, dust, or debris packed in there. This is the number one reason phones stop charging. The lint prevents the cable from making a solid connection.
- 2
Clean out the charging port
Power off your phone first. Take a wooden or plastic toothpick and very gently scrape out any lint or debris from the port. Work carefully โ the pins inside are delicate. You can also use short bursts of compressed air to blow out dust. Clean until you can see the metal contacts clearly.
- 3
Try a different cable and charger
USB-C cables wear out and break internally even if they look fine outside. Try a different cable and a different wall charger. Make sure you're plugging into a wall outlet, not a computer USB port โ computers often don't provide enough power. Google recommends using an 18W or 30W USB-C charger.
- 4
Try wireless charging
If you have a Pixel 3 or newer, try a wireless charger. If wireless charging works but wired doesn't, the charging port itself is damaged and may need replacement. If neither works, it's likely a battery or software problem.
- 5
Force restart while plugged in
With the charger plugged in, hold the Power button for 30 seconds. This forces a restart even if the screen appears completely dead. Sometimes a frozen system prevents the charging icon from appearing even though the phone is actually charging.
- 6
Boot into Safe Mode
If the phone turns on but stops charging after a few percent, boot into Safe Mode: hold the Power button, then long-press 'Power off' until you see 'Reboot to safe mode'. If it charges normally in Safe Mode, a third-party app is interfering with charging. Uninstall recent apps.
If That Didn't Work
- The battery may be completely dead. Charge for at least 1 hour before giving up โ deeply drained batteries can take a long time to show any sign of life.
- Moisture in the charging port can prevent charging. Let the phone dry out for a few hours.
- A damaged charging port board needs soldering or replacement โ usually a $50โ$80 repair at a shop.
When to Call a Professional
If port cleaning and new cables don't fix it, the charging port may need replacement. At a repair shop, this costs $50โ$80. If the battery itself is dead, replacement costs $50โ$100. Google's official repair through iFixit costs $70โ$100 for battery replacement with genuine parts.
